It was a year, the year when nothing was as it should be.
Warm rain instead of frosty snow. The tree dropping its needles in less than a week.
Kids not interested in garland or twinkling lights on the porch.
The piano silent, no off-tune carols sung around it.
Cookies burned or shunned as too many carbs.
Every expectation like a reflection, blurred and reversed.
Until it occurred to me, the one thing that hadn’t changed or been altered,
The reason for the memories of the past and the joys yet to come.
This is a celebration however it’s wrapped.
It’s holiday time with so many celebrating something. This post is a tribute to how often these events can disappoint unless we remember the reason we are doing it all in the first place. Photo prompt kudos go to Dale Rogerson as part of Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneer challenge. 1 photo, 100 words, tell the story.
Everything changes and morphs as our lives do. It’s up to us to find a way to celebrate! Nicely done 🙂

Dear Clare,
Sounds a little like our Christmas morning. Used to be filled with kids getting us up early. Squealing over their gifts. Fighting. Now it’s the two of us. This year we didn’t even open our gifts until after we’d showered and had breakfast. Still a sweet celebration.
Evocative piece you’ve written, my dear.
Shalom and Happy New Year,
Rochelle

But—it’s the carbs that keep us warm in the cold weather! Right?

There’s been a lot of that in the last few years. In years when everything seems wrong, why should holidays be any different? You’re right though. There’s a reason this is the holiday season. People needed reasons to celebrate and break free from the doldrums of the short, cold, dark, dreary, winter days. If only they came with fewer carbs.

Interesting reflection, Clare. And, of course, in the mirror worlds, the kids can be right in one, and the parents in another. Maybe the secret is in the mirroring
