Rodan didn’t want to tell his young protégé he failed but for heaven’s sake.

“You left footprints.”

“What? I got the sample everyone was afraid to take and you’re nailing me on a few marks on ice?”

“It seems small until a swarm of  humans arrive. Next thing you know we can’t get the few mls of sample we need to make a vaccine for the next generation. Do you want to be responsible for that?”

“No, I do not.”

“Then get back down there and clean up the evidence.”

“Yes, teacher.”

“Good is only good when all is good.”

A simple tale from a not so simple photo by David Stewart. Offered up for the participants of Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneer photo challenge.

To let someone know they could have done better is a gift, not a curse. Of course how it’s delivered can make it a positive or negative experience.

I’ve spent the last few weeks with my very cranky, very somewhat unkind mother being corrected multiple times. Some points fair (if I was going for perfection) and some outlandishly unfair criticism. Am I looking for sympathy? You bet! However, I can’t deny I’m a whole lot sharper than I was before I spent this time with her. Even if the expectations are unrealistic, it’s human nature to try and live up to them. No worries, I’m old enough to put it in perspective and I answer to a Higher Call who thankfully is full of mercy and grace.

Have a great day (or night) and do your best, but know your value is not in how well you do life, you’re just plain valuable by being human. Best, Clare

Ouch, a need for perfection could lead to more exposure though. Especially by humans.
I like what you did with this one!

It’s good to be pushed in some areas and given grace in others, I think! Unfortunately, it seems these areas don’t always align between different people.

Clare, I enjoyed your afterword as much as your story. I understand where you’re coming from, but there comes a time when a parent needs to stfu with criticism of their adult child. Please, no offense intended by my comment, I just don’t like to think of you getting chastised unnecessarily. No, you’re not perfect — and neither is she!

Thank you for the laugh!! My mom has issues…serious issues, but for a moment I heard myself saying stfu. Of course, not out loud! I’m in a battle right now…angel on one shoulder, devil on the other, just trying to remember who I want to be when all is said and done.

To be fair, a trail of (elf?) footprints does seem like quite a big mistake

Elves! I didn’t even think of that but that opens up more possibilities with a story line.

The shifting of blame and responsibility is a trait I come across often. Well told.

If perfection is the standard, then performance will be at its highest level. A lot of our problems have stemmed from accepting ‘best I can do’ as laudable. But that’s just me, I guess.

I think there are times when the best someone can do is far from perfection so ‘good enough’ comes into play, but setting the bar low (for that persons capabilities) doesn’t bring out the best in anyone. It’s easy to not try harder, but rewarding when I do. I think that was the lesson learned.

I am constantly reminding those who expect too much that my middle name is imperfection. It isn’t true but it works
