His anger never erupted,

It oozed out, in a slow flow of heated words.

The bright light of fiery hostility,

Dulled by a cool layer of civility.

If not paying attention,

Without warning, a poor oblivious soul could be overtaken by the advancing destruction of all things good,

between it and whatever structure of relationship had been erected.

The key was to note when tremors began in the ground of a conversation.

A sense of the temperature rising,

The pressure building.

Try words like these:

“You’re twelve not two,

 Stop and count to five.

We don’t have time for this.”

It’s Friday Fictioneers back at Rochelle Wisoff’s blog. This week’s photo by Ken Arnoplole is an interesting dual colored scene that is sure to inspire some wild 100 word clips. I’m certain my little tale won’t be the only one seeing a representation of anger. I’m not sure what is worse, someone who flies off the handle in a burst of fury or someone who smolders in anger keeping everyone guessing. The fact is humans are bound to get angry. Sometimes justified, sometimes just a crossing of wires in someone’s brain. Either way, best policy is to let anger have space to exist but not too big a place that it can’t be dispersed with sincere explanation or soothing ‘you can make mistakes it’s okay’. A healthy relationship can handle anger without crumbling into tears or causing cracks that give way more meaning to a little friction than it deserves. And that’s my two cents! Ha ha.

Live happy, stomp your feet if you must but return for a hug! Best, Clare.

Anger seems to less and less be balanced by acceptance of other views. Social media as an outlet for everyone without filter is not making that better. Great story, very true.

Very nicely done, Clare. I worry about the slow burners. Usually they are the ones that once they reach the end, there is no negotiating, no turning back.

Thank you! That is an interesting video. I think on the rare occasion I’m headed toward losing it, I will make a fist, not to punch someone (haha) but to remind myself my brain has had enough time to be regulated!

There is a lot of wisdom on your fiction and the follow up – and sadly, I think anger management is not taught at all in schools and I like how your piece had little gems like this “note when tremors began in the ground of a conversation.” – and to detect when anger might surface.

Your wisdom about managing anger and knowing some is healthy reminded me of how some researchers call certain burts of anger as flipping the lid (unregulated brain) and your note about “stop and count to five” (or 55) could help someone regulate the brain and not “flip the lid”

Nice story, and I enjoyed the commentary that followed. I look out for the slow burners- because that is usually a fire than never goes out.
