We exposed our children to culture, art, history,

Taking trips to Paris, Egypt, New York City.

They wrote reports, learned vocabulary, took tests.

They saw what war looked like on re-enacted battlefields.

There was little time to awaken compassion, integrity, community.

We crammed those moments with purpose.

No video games, no social media distractions.

They worked alongside us in the garden.

They tended the chickens at the crack of dawn.

When we arrived at the park picnic area with its ring of stones,

We thought of Stonehenge.

The kids jumped up on them and leaped like frogs.

“You’re it, Mom!”

The last laugh is on mom and dad, or maybe these parents just need to have a little fun!

This short tale is brought to you by Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneers photo prompt. The photo is compliments of Lisa Fox.

I would definitely play a game of tag leaping on those rocks. My childhood neighbors had a ring of boulders around tennis courts. We climbed on those rocks like they were MT Everest or ships in the sea. Great times, I will never forget. Thankful for the two men who owned the property and did not chase us kids off.

    • Parenting is a dangerous occupation, so easy to get it wrong…

Oh tough parents but it seems the kids are all right. Getting their fun still. Poor parents, when do they get to rest and relax?

It’s not easy to get it right with parenting. I’m cheering for this pair with their thoughtful approach, and the ending shows that they can learn to loosen up too. Lovely story. Congratulations on the book.

Clare, the area in the photo is a children’s learning area, so I’m guessing plenty of youngsters (and adults) have climbed on the stones. My little granddaughter loves to climb on boulders (with our supervision) and any raised ledge she can walk along.

Hopefully mom and dad can join the kids for some fun.

(On another subject, I’m not sure that I like TJ)

Well, TJ will redeem himself…I’m guessing you’ve not read too far into the story. Thanks for the comment though! It’s means a lot when people start responding to a character.

I think the kids are on to something; sometimes you just need a game of tag!

Our friends raised their children this way ~ occasional T.V., LOTS of trips in nature and to see family. Didn’t hurt them one little bit. And I’m pretty sure the kids pulled a Hijinx or two.

    Dear Clare,

Sounds like mom and dad need to take some time to play. Although it’s commendable that the kids didn’t play video games.

    Shalom,
