“It’s true, there’s no place like home, no matter where it is.

Everyone needs a place to rest in the familiar, even if,

there’s someone yelling in the background.

But it’s okay to long for better, right?

Be brave and go on a quest,

Pursue surroundings without walls,

HOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

Fresh air, fresh dreams.

Make a new home, foreign at first,

But give it time.

Do it, so when you click your heels together,

the place you’ll return to is exactly the place you want to be.”

“Thanks Vito.”

He wipes his hands on a rag. “I’ll bill you for the brakes.”

Maybe you’re wondering where in the photo was the prompt for this story. Believe it or not, it’s in the lower right hand corner. The blue gingham fabric immediately made me think of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. It doesn’t take much! That show was a serious part of my childhood. We were allowed to watch it on my parents colored TV because it was in “living color”. However, as much as I liked the scared lion and the squeaky tin man, I was petrified of the witch and monkeys. The neighbor flying by on her bicycle gave me more than one nightmare. It really is a scary show for a child, right up there with Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory (the original). Many thanks to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields both for the photo and the Friday Fictioneers 100 word story challenge. Go check out her blog and read other stories, probably more sensibly inspired than mine!

    Loved your story (poem?).
I also concur with everything you said about The Wizard of Oz.
    Me too.

I enjoyed the idea of getting advice from a car mechanic. A delightful take on the prompt. (Now my eye focuses on that fabric when I look at the picture 🙂

What an eye for detail you have. A great story. I didn’t see the Wizard of Oz as a child as it isn’t part of my culture, but I loved and still love it.

Your childhood was safe! No scary ladies flying by and cackling scary words. 🙃

    Dear Clare,

I, too, grew up with the movie. I used to think it would be great to be able to watch it whenever I wanted rather than once a year. I lived to regret that wish in the days of VHS when my youngest son went through a phase where he watched it every day.
Wherever the prompt leads you is good. Well done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

In know what you mean about the annual showing! It used to be we had to wait and it was a special occasion. There will never be another generation that understands those simple joys.

“The Wizard Of Oz” is one of those things that is forever a part of the fabric of our society. I grew up with it because my dad loved it.

I’ve always loved TWOZ, especially the original. Some movies just should never be re-made! Wonderful that you took a tiny detail from the prompt and created such atmosphere.

I loved the tie-in with The Wizard of Oz. Return to Oz was creepier for me, the lady with multiple heads and the asylum. Both movies were part of my childhood. TWOZ is art on film.

I’m always quoting that line, “pay no attention to that man behind the curtain”. So many life lessons in one production!
