“Remember the little shop with those silky sun dresses?

You had to have one even though you were wearing your favorite.

And that ‘mind’ shop? You bought three ‘peace’ candles that melted in the sun.

But those samples of hot cinnamon rolls, now those were worth stopping for even in ninety degree weather, remember?

That lane was full of more hooks than the ocean.

And we took the bait off every one of them.

We’ll go back there again, to the beach real soon Anne.”

“Yes,” she said voice slurred.

Rich watched as the gurney disappeared into the operating room.

Sometimes it’s only up against the prospect of massive change that the appreciation of days past comes to mind to provide a scaffolding to reach a place of acceptance. My sister is undergoing tricky neurosurgery this day, maybe even this moment. She’s a wonderful person and dearly loved. She also loves the beach and we wish her many more days in the sun. This short story was written in honor of her. It is brought to you by the photo prompt at Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneers. Photo credit © Rowena Curtin.

Update since this morning, all went well for my sister, no complications. Thank you for all the best wishes!

Surgery is always scary, especially anything neurological. I’m glad your sister came through well. Your story perfectly captures the tension of a loved one anticipating surgery. “Think happy thoughts.”
