They didn’t forage the forest for sustenance,

Just for treats; raspberries, blueberries, chanterelles.

Their food grew underground and not in the dirt.

Crazy right? That’s what Darrell thought the first time seeing the tomatoes with their stringy roots dangling in nutrient rich water.

More amazing were the dense rice paddies that generated enough food to feed two thousand people.

At the head of each garden colored lights indicated the status; juvenile, first harvest, last harvest.

The final garden to see, rows and rows of flowers.

“Are they edible?” he asked.

The answer, “Not for the stomach, but the soul.”

Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneers 100 word story photo challenge brought us a prompt from Rowena appropriate for the season. Who isn’t thinking about gardening this time of year? Or at least looking forward to flowers blooming once again.

Today’s post is from the POV of the novel I’m preparing to publish, “The Caller and the Healer”. Check out my “About” page for more on that.

That’s a great example of human ingenuity. According to sci-fi, someday, we’ll be growing food on Mars. Why not underground? Good luck with your novel.

I want to go to this garden. I want to live next to it and walk the ten steps to it every morning to spend my days working in it. And then I want to eat! Where do I sign up?

Unfortunately you would have to be a Matere; part of a secret tribe of people who live hidden from the rest of humanity by subliminal manipulation and then you would be a character in my novel, “The Caller and the Healer”. 🙃

Many thanks Brenda! In the novel, the people the gardens feed are not in the future but their existence is as secret as their underground gardens.

Fascinating ideas. I’m getting the feeling of a future world or maybe an extra-terrestrial one. The thousands needing to be fed seem to be well catered for in this place. And they’ve got the balance right – the soul is just as hungry for sustenance. I’m heading over to your ‘About’ page to find out more. Maybe to find out if I’m on the right or wrong track here. 🤔 In any case, I really like this.
