100 Word Story – Friday Fictioneers Photo Challenge

Good posture leads to a longer life.

They say it’s all about where you park your butt,

And mine is parked way too long in a cheap chair from

“Office R Us”, yes the very same place that went out of business,

They have no business creating such torture devices for work from home humans.

Work from home but company doesn’t provide the top of the line furniture,

Like the ‘on-site’ employees have.

I lament all the way to my deck,

Cat waiting to curl up on my lap,

While I leave the ‘office’ chair behind.

Here’s to long life.

There are so many interesting things in this week’s photo by Jennifer Pendergast for Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneers Photo challenge. Somehow my eye fell upon the office chair, a lovely chair with red accents very unlike the flea market find that graces my home office. Really I could purchase a chair for a few hundred dollars that wouldn’t be mistaken for trash but…with a memory foam cushion the darn thing actually works. Besides…I don’t plan on staying parked in front of a computer screen forever like a pilot in a cockpit of an eight hour flight of soul draining torture. And to be fair, there’s no special treatment of on-site vs work from home employees. The company accommodations are no more brag worthy than my own. Truth be told, I also do not spend my mornings with a laptop on the deck…it’s too hot or cold, too many bugs and the lighting just doesn’t work. It’s a nice thought though!

Here’s to sitting up straight wherever you find yourself today! Best, Clare.

Ah, I hear this lament with working from home (mind you, often the ‘good’ chairs at work on-site are just as uncomfortable)

I like how you came back to the idea of how to live a long life. It is indeed important where we ‘park our butts’ and I’m with you – relaxing on the deck with a comfy cat in your lap is guaranteed to increase longevity.

Thanks you Margaret! My cat is a joy when she’s on my lap…just not when my keyboard seems just as comfy to her!

When did affordable well made products stop being made? Nice story.

I found your recount interesting. During lockdown my daughter worked from home and her office allowed the employees to take their expensive chairs home for the duration.

These are the chairs of agony!
    Whoever designed them is a sadist;
yet they are infinitely better than the ones I remember from my office days.
    Clever write, Clare

You’ve brought an interesting point I had not considered. My desk chair at work is super comfy maybe not everyone has one of those at home.

Clare, can totally connect with the lame home office chair. Why do we do these things to ourselves?

So true, but it’s hard for me to reconcile a chair as a significant investment…not like my son who dropped at least 5G on his chair…ordered on-line! But you know, it’s the best out there.

at least 5G on a chair!?!? For that amount it should do the work also! My current chair was old when I got it (surplus from the place I used to work) and as my butt has grown, it has not.

It doesn’t look like a comfortable chair does it. Well done.

Yesterday, I put my dog in this chair and wheeled him around the house. He did not look very happy though. Maybe it has a ‘work vibe’ which playful ones don’t appreciate.

Funny, I’ve only just done a display screen online course which highlights posture and home office equipment, sadly the company is broke and theres little chance of a new chair any time soon, but you’re right; a cushion does help things!

Agreed–so many possibilities. I thought about using the Santa hat, but nothing really good came to mind, except that it seems to be an anomaly.

You know I had to check the photo for the Santa hat! I could probably spin off several little tales from that photo. Thanks for joining the CG Express club. I’ll try not to let you down with drivel.

Ah, the woes of sedentary working life, Clare. I feel for you. Curling up with the cat isn’t generally orthopedically advised either, but it sure does wonders for the soul!

I enjoyed your story, Clare. Funny you should mention dodgy office chairs today. My lounge chair which is my work station of sorts has died and I’m getting annoying lower back pain and a somewhat bulging disk and I made a few calls today. I am starting to get onto it but not a cheap thing to replace. Trying to move around more and not sit for so long too. So yes I am looking to improve my posture too.
Hope you have a great week.
    Best wishes,
    Rowena

I’m glad you enjoyed and related to the story. Best of luck in finding a new chair that supports your back! We’ve got to live with these bodies long after the job is history.

    Dear Clare,

I always wonder how my friends who work from home do it. At least she can leave the chair and enjoy her cat and her deck. Good one.

In reality though it’s not all a dream, but there is the ability to take a quick stroll in the garden which does wonders for my state of mind.
