Idle boys spell trouble.
โ€œBring me a pineapple Humberto. Iโ€™ll tell you a story.โ€
The boy quickly delivered the juiciest fruit.
โ€œGet me another. One not so soft.โ€
Humberto shrugged and picked one, large, misshapen.
โ€œA pretty one, not the biggest.โ€
โ€œAbuelo, why didnโ€™t you say that first time?โ€ Abuelo shrugged. The boy brought another, perfect.
Abuelo took it, turned it sideways and pierced the skin with his knife.
He plunged the knife again and again.
โ€œDone.โ€
โ€œBut you havenโ€™t told me a story.โ€
โ€œI did.โ€ He split the fruit to reveal a swan.
โ€œThe story of making a swan.โ€

Humberto will never forget that story. There were so many little thoughts sparked as I read through this – a multi-layered piece. Very good.

Showing is better than telling! Cute story and no more true statement has been made…”idle boys spells trouble.” (haha)

I didn’t even know that pineapple carving was a thing (is it?). The title is perfect, especially for writers as readers.
