A virus made sense. Everyone wanted sense. Ten years after the supposed pandemic alternate theories bubbled up.

“I read it was biological warfare,” Dani’s sister said.

Dani stretched her legs onto the wood box that served as storage for the flashlights and of course, the folding knife. They didn’t have guns, only the ultra-sharp knife. Dani would not hesitate to use it, but she didn’t think her sister or Maria would. That’s why it was next to the couch, Dani’s bed.

“We need a booby trap,” Dani said. “At the front door.”

“What we need is a man,” Maria said.

This 100 word photo prompted story is the opening, abridged paragraph to a new novel I (shouldn’t be) writing. It’s a dystopian, Earth secretly taken over by aliens, romance. Ha! How’s that for packing in multiple genres? But that’s not why I shouldn’t be writing the novel. I’ve got two other serious book projects going on and a 3-book series that I’ve been editing/writing for fun (wait it’s all fun!) and 3 other poorly drafted novels begging for edits.

Check out the rest of the stories in the pond by jumping over to Rochelle Wisoff’s Friday Fictioneers photo challenge. The interesting photo is the © of Lori Wilson.

Thanks for reading! Check out the one book I’ve managed to publish, which is not sci-fi but has a lot of heart— Finding Home -Tyler’s story. Find it on my Amazon author page. Book 2 with a dual timeline of present day and 1920s bootlegging days is one of the serious projects I should be working on.

Yeah, I know that pull of writing multiple books at once. 🙂 I like where this is going so far. Reminds me of Y: The Last Man with women surviving in a post-apocalyptic scenario.

Sometimes just having a guy around can deter predators who would otherwise become a problem to women living alone. Of course, not everyone’s going to agree with that.

I liked how you used bubbles in your story. And that’s exactly why you should write your multi-genre novel. 🙂

The worst type of warfare, biological. Agh!

“Biological” covers a lot of ground. I may have to change that in the novel because what appeared to be a pandemic, was actually an alien initiative to basically shut people off…aka shut down their brain. When they went to sleep, they didn’t wake up the next morning.

The circumstances are not entirely fictional. Just ask any group of young women living on their own.

Well at least he symbolizes safety! It remains to be seen if he lives up to that calling…

Well, it just reflects that in most cases in a dangerous world, women are more vulnerable alone than with a man around, assuming he is a good man.
