Kindle Vella is packed with great stories by authors who may never have their work published any other way. That may be because they they’ve given up on the arduous task of query letters or their story is too unique to fit in an easy marketing strategy or it’s an over-done trope that a publisher won’t touch. There are a few authors who don’t realize how great they are and haven’t believed in their work enough to publish a book.
As I said in my previous post, there are so many stories. It is a huge collection for a reader to peruse with ease, reading at will for no cost until you’re totally hooked on a story.
However, the sea of stories can be daunting. In my recent experience with Kindle Vella, I have come across some great stories that I can recommend. Of course, what appeals to me, may not be what you like but I will endeavor to give enough information to be helpful.

Here’s my first top FOUR Vella stories that I’ve found:

Science Fantasy / Endos War – Fay Thompson
Young Adult Fantasy / Zahra and the Golden Scarab of Balihar – Michael Grayford
Romantic Comedy / Meet the Family S1 – Carol Maloney Scott
YA Dystopian / The Barrier – Ray Verola

Full review of ENDOs War:
Endos War drops the reader right into the protagonist’s mental state. She doesn’t know what’s going on as she wakes up in Episode 1, which drives the story forward. The intensity of those first paragraphs begs the reader to keep reading.

What I like about this story – It is challenging. Reader you won’t be handed anything, but it is immersive and once started on the adventure, you will be lost in it. The world the story takes place in becomes real. As in any alien world, the amount of information needed to explain what’s what can easily become heavy info dumping. This story does not info dump. The ideas that are shared through the plot are thought provoking. Issues like gender inequality are masterfully explored in a philosophical way.
What’s good about this story – the writing is seamless; the author’s voice is silent. The character’s hold their own.
What the reader needs to know: Put your brain on. This is not a skim through story. Recommend no distractions or at least that no one around you will mind that you’re oblivious to their presence.
Final words – If you’re not a reader who needs to be spoon fed and you like to get lost in a different world, Endo’s War will not let you down.

Zahra and the Golden Scarab of Balihar – Michael Grayford – This story is a fun, well written, “Arabian Nights” toned tale. The characters are colorful and endearing. The plot is imaginative and active. (Young Adult)Amazon link to this story.

Meet the Family S1 – Carol Maloney Scott – This story is all laughs. The source of the humor being familiar family quirkiness, but the actual families are unique and entertaining. In the mix is a budding romance that keeps the reader caring about what happens next. If you need a good laugh, this is a must read. Amazon link to “Meet the Family”.

The Barrier – Ray Verola – This story is right up my alley being a Dystopian Young Adult story. his story is all about the young people rising above a world that isn’t letting them live fully. It begins with a life altering event for the protagonist. Right away it’s clear how this world is not caring for its citizens which brings the reader on board with the need for change. Just a few episodes in, it’s clear there’s depth to the plot with layers that flesh out the basic premise. The characters are defined and bring to life the hopes, dreams, dangers and challenges of life behind the “Barrier”. A recommended read for Dystopian fans.
