A New Day

Night slipped into dawn.

No one slept.

It wasn’t planned but Doug and the kids were all up,

lounging on the couch, the floor, Jimmy’s face covered in peanut butter and jelly, the quickest snack his sister could make.

I could barely breath.

“The wait is killing me,” I said for the millionth time.

“I know,” Doug responded. “Soon.”

“Why is it taking so long?”

“Time zones.”

“What if…?”

“Don’t go there.”

“I couldn’t bear it, knowing what she’s been through.”

The phone rang.

I didn’t put it on speaker.

Doug leaned in.

“You’re approved. The adoption is going forward.”

There I was, fearing that grandma or some other loved-one was in danger and then the happy ending. A great rise of tension, I love the details.

Some of life’s biggest moments are announced by a phone call. I’m sure everyone can identify with the tension of the wait, and the dread that the news won’t be what was hoped for. You’ve shown it well. My daughter had a similar wait about 12 years ago and she now has a strapping 15 year old son.
