I walk on floors that shake. Dark corners have eyes peering from them. The water rises on both sides of a road with nothing but a thin sapling of a tree to hold unto. I can’t find my way back home. My fingers can’t type a phone number, and I can’t remember it anyway. Whoever is after me is catching up. These are the hallmarks of a dream turning nightmare. Is this the stuff of a good novel? Maybe, but I don’t write horror, yet, because I face it in dreams and it’s not fun.

But half the time, I do get inspired by dreams to write a book. That’s where it begins. That’s where the upcoming “We Are Survivors” novel began. I was dropped in a scene of an apocalypse, chaos and ruin all around. I’m not alone. I’m with a man. We are trying to survive and take refuge in a crashed bus. He is a farmer. He instructs me on what we need to do to ensure a crop. I think of my family and not knowing where they are and if they are alive as I partner with this man who is kind, hardworking and respectful. There’s a sense of time, of permanence to the situation and I wonder what my family will think of me if we ever meet again.

Yes, that’s the seed. Look for how that seed grew to a character rich story in the upcoming release of “We Are Survivors”.
