Chicken Little Warned Them – 100 Word Story

No one ever looked up.

They just came in and marveled at the table set with plates of lobsters and cups of butter sprawled out.

“This is fantastic!”

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

Truly it was one of those gathering places that turned an old barn into a destination.

Soon laughter traveled wide and free, voices echoing in the air of twenty foot ceilings.

Old beams, rustic, hilarious junk nailed to the walls, the floors, the ceiling.

Until they weren’t.

A sword fish came flying down, skewering the birthday man’s hand,

Dragging with it a fishing net of anchors, harpoons, hooks,

A rain of terror.

It’s been a minute but wow, the photo prompt Rochelle provided for this week’s Friday Fictioneers Photo challenge at Rochelle’s blog, is such a cool place. It occurred to me that no one ever worries about the stability of a zany decorated restaurant. Of course the photo doesn’t have a sword fish or a net of dangerous whaling gear but hopefully the connection is there. If not, apologies people, I’m out of practice!

I was relieved when the sword impaled his hand and not his head or heart! Still, a terrifying picture!

Scary tale, for sure. I don’t think this is out of practice at all – I believe Rochelle herself expounds the ‘Inspiration not Illustration’ theory of FF and you definitely captured the feel of the photo

You’re welcome! Not my usual style but that shark set a menacing tone!

We take a lot for granted. I often wonder about how much we trust other drivers to obey the rules, and planes to stay up in the air – but a stuffed swordfish falling down is a new one. I’ll add it to my list.

Welcome back, Clare. “A rain of terror” is perfect for what happened. That quantity of objects suspended over me and food always makes me nervous.

It doesn’t sound like you’re out of practice. Practical me would worry about the risks of eating there, for many reasons. I just stumbled back to FF today myself. We always have a place to go on Fridays or Thursday or Wednesday. It’s like home, when you show up they have to take us back. Ha ha

Yes, there are a few themed places and full of oddities, we don’r=t expect them to fall on us though.
