This post is for you, writer, who could be locked in a room with a word processor on a laptop, or even a pen and a notebook and you would be content for a very, very, very long time.
Sometimes, a writer needs to put aside their own work and get lost in someone else’s book (or books). I am so thankful for the authors that wrote the books I have read and enjoyed. I count finding a new, good author, a precious jewel in a treasure box of fish tank gravel.
I found my last good author while hunting for comps on novels I’m writing. I never fit smoothly into the closest genre to what I’m writing. Error 101 – write for the market…if the goal is book sales.
I’ve lost sight of what my goal is. I’ve just been writing multiple books at the same time (and loving it), none of which fit cleanly into a genre. So I put my books aside and read someone else’s books that do for me what I want to do for others with my books.
If you’re at that place of scratching your head and wondering, what am I doing this for? Don’t be afraid to put your stuff aside and sit back with a good book. Go to the library and randomly pick a book out from the shelf. You’d be amazed at the books by authors that the Amazon top ten list has long since forgotten and yet the novels are epic!
Happy writing! And Happy reading!
Best, Clare
What I’m reading now for writing/life break time:
