Bambi Has Brothers and Sisters
For those of you who have followed this blog awhile, you might be familiar with my “Five Things” series. Usually posted all at once but, hey, I need content to stretch out a bit and really, you all need to check back and visit more than once!
Here’s what it’s all about. Five posts of observations that sent me down bunny trails of thought that I want to bring you hopping down too. Come along, let’s get started with number 1.
Number 1: population explosion.
I was driving slowly along a road in a National park forest, having just taken a quick swim in the cool waters of a lake. It was late afternoon and only one other family was left at the beach. Their gaggle of children were dragging their floaty rafts and chairs across the parking lot when I pulled out. My thoughts were lost in gratitude for the beauty of the natural surroundings. I rounded a bend and saw a fawn in the middle of the road. Its ears twitched and then it scampered to the other side. Another fawn waited at the edge to start across so I stopped to give it courage to safely cross. It paused just a moment then leaped with its tiny wobbly legs and dashed into the woods, joining its five siblings. Yes, indeed there was a group of (at least) six fawns all looking at me with their bobbing tails and bright eyes. I would have snapped a photo if I had the phone ready and if I didn’t expect that family in their packed SUV to come around the corner any moment. This sounds like a ‘you should have seen the fish that got away’ story, but I assure you, I’m not writing fiction here. I’ve never seen more than two fawns together and I’ve never heard of deer keeping a herd’s fawns all together. So, did I witness a freak of nature? Sextuplets? What exactly is in that lake water anyway?
Come back tomorrow for Number 2. Leave a comment people, let me know you’re in for the series. Have a great day, mind the roads at night this fall when those little Bambi’s grow up to big bucks that take their time crossing. Best, Clare
